The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) was looking for extra help in its journey to control its information flow, and develop quicker and more cost-effective IT management and maintenance.

Rather than trying to meet these growing IT needs in-house, the DIA decided that the most cost-efficient way to maintain and future-proof a world-class IT shop that provided ease of use was to outsource all of its infrastructural components.

Datacom and the DIA have a long history of working together, including on the Government Logon Service (GLS), Identity Verification System (IVS), Data Access Platform (DAP), Shared Workspace, and Celebrants Online.

“While the transition ran very smoothly, I was always well aware that it was just the start of the journey. The relationship between our teams and organisations continues to evolve as we each work out our strengths and weaknesses. What’s impressed me most is Datacom’s willingness to respond and change in order to maintain our good working relationship.”

Chris East, former chief information officer, Department of Internal Affairs

In less than five months, the transition to a new managed system took place. Together with the DIA, we created a ‘One Team’ approach that saw processes strengthened, updated and simplified. By working together, issues could be handled quickly and effectively, which significantly helped the government and public during the best and worst times, including the Wellington earthquake that saw the service desk able to carry on its work despite staff being asked to evacuate.
